Trustee Election Set For September 25, 2010

Seven trustees, who are elected by district residents, govern the Hampton Library and serve three-year terms. Current members of the board include: President Gail Davenport, Vice-President Elise Quimby, Treasurer Lee Foster, Secretary Jackie Poole, Donna Hopping, the Hon. Bruce Kaplan, and Elizabeth Kotz.
Gail Davenport (Bridgehampton), Elise Quimby (Bridgehampton) and Bruce Kaplan (Sagaponack) will end their three year terms on September 30th, 2010 and seek re-election. Library Trustees are an important link between the library and the community. Trustees should be advocates of the library and leaders in developing superior services that are responsive to the needs of the entire community.
The Hampton Library’s next Trustee election is scheduled for Saturday, September 25th, 2010. Candidate petitions will be available as of July 26th, 2010 from the director’s office during hours of operation, and at the District Clerks’ offices from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Petitions must have twenty-five signatures of registered voters from the School District (Bridgehampton or Sagaponack) in which the petitioner resides. Petitions must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 26th 2010.

Programs for Adults

Spanish for Beginners
Tuesdays, July 6th – August 24th at 10:00 a.m.
In this 8-week series, students will learn basic conversational Spanish to help in communicating effectively in personal and professional day-to-day situations. A $30.00 fee is due at registration.

Introduction to Pilates Mat - Class Extended
Tuesdays, July 20th - August 31st, no class August 17th, from 5:00-6:00 p.m.
Have you ever wanted to try Pilates? Now is your chance to approach this unique and effective form of exercise with a gentle and modified approach. Pilates mat is a series of exercises that focuses on strengthening the “powerhouse” which include the abs, hips and lower back. Pilates can help you to improve your posture, flexibility and balance as well as strengthen your muscles. Movements are done mostly laying on the floor for extended periods of time in face up (supine), Side lying and face down (prone) positions. Please bring and exercise mat and towel and wear comfortable clothing. $40 for all 6 or $7 per session.

Taproot Writing Workshop with Eileen Obser Continues
Wednesdays, July 21st – August 18th, from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
This 5-week session is for adults 50 and older who are interested in learning and practicing the craft of writing. Do you have a story to tell? Have you always wanted to write but didn’t know how to start? This workshop, led by local writer Eileen Obser, is for you! A $35 fee is due at registration. New writers welcome!

“The Worldly and the Local in One Librarian’s Life – Bridgehampton’s Ernestine Rose”
August 12th, 6:00 p.m.
Learn about the remarkable life of Ernestine Rose, from Hayground to Europe to a long and distinguished career at the New York Public Library. Presentation given by local historian, Ann Sandford, PhD.

Working with Your Digital Photos
August 14th, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon.
Hands On! You have a digital camera and know how to take pictures, but how do you move the images from the camera to the computer? How do you organize your pictures and edit them? In this class you will learn the answers to these questions and much more. We will cover using an image editing program that allows you to resize, crop, adjust light levels, and more. Learn how to organize, name and save your pictures. A $5.00 fee is due at registration.

Remembering Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Sunday, August 15th, at 2:00 p.m.
Howard Scherry, author of “Antoine de Saint-Exupery and ‘The Little Prince’: You Can Go Home Again- In Your Memory” will give a talk about the legendary author/aviator on the subject of his war-time exile in New York, the writing of “The Little Prince” and recently discovered letters written to his mother.

Special Exhibit: Author! Author! The Faces of Fridays at Five

The summer exhibition on view in the Geri Bauer Gallery in the lower level of the library is a celebration of all the authors who have spoken at “Fridays at Five.” Photographs of all of them line the walls of the gallery, an impressive array of l50 writers who’ve spoken over 200 afternoons since the popular series of informal talks began in l984. The Friends of the Hampton Library invite the authors, organize the events, and welcome audiences every summer. The library is grateful for the Friends’ support and salutes the writers who have generously shared their time with us.

The Gallery is open 7 days/week during library hours.
